ARROWSMITH ARCHERS

A division of PQFG

The Parksville-Qualicum Fish and Game Association has an active archery club called Arrowsmith Archers.  The club is affiliated with the British Columbia Archery Association (BCAA) and is involved in the Junior Olympic program (JOP).

Youth archers use the JOP categories, shooting rules, scoring system and qualify for certificates of achievement at various levels as they develop their skills. Many compete in provincial indoor and outdoor championships and have been placing well provincially.

The archery club dates back over 35 years and presently has about 40 archers ranging in age from eight years and up. Archers shoot in two groups: Junior Olympians (under 21) and Adult Olympians. The objective is constant improvement to an Olympic competitive level.

Safety is of prime importance and all shoots are supervised by BCAA certified coaches. The range is typically 18 metres and, as an archer improves, he/she moves to progressively smaller targets. Each archer's results are recorded and submitted to a master log maintained by BCAA so archers can measure their skill against others in the province.

A basic youth membership in Arrowsmith Archers costs about $125 per year which includes memberships in both BCAA and PQFG and liability insurance. Prospective members may shoot the first night for free and pay a nominal fee of $10 for each subsequent night. If an archer decides to join, the membership fee is reduced by the total of the $10 fees paid. The club supplies the equipment required for the first year.

All meetings are held at the Pentecostal Hall in Nanoose Bay. Indoor shooting starts on Sept. 15. The Junior Olympian archers meet on Mondays at 7 p.m.; the adults on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Junior may shoot on Wednesdays with an adult who is actively shooting.

Monthly 3D shoots are held indoors on a regular night and periodically at PQFG's Dorman Range in North Qualicum. There is an annual 3D shoot, open to archers province-wide, held at Dorman Range and called the Harry Tutton Shoot after one of our long-term members.
